Biographical Sketch:

I've worked in the western U.S., East Africa, central and northern Europe, Australia, and central Asia (Mongolia, Uzbekistan) on environmental monitoring.  The first half of my career was working for U.S. Forest Service Research and the second half in academia.  I am widely known for my aspen ecology work and have made many media appearances discussing the fate of aspen ecosystems, including the well-known aspen Pando clone in southcentral Utah.  My work has appeared in newprint, books, on TV news, in documentaries, an IMAX film, children's and adult books a total of +100 times.  I regularly give public presentations to groups of widely varying backgrounds and education levels.  I have published more than 50 technical papers, book chapters, and refereed reports.  I also publish in general audience outlets, such as Natural History, Earth Island Journal, and High Country News.
