Biographical Sketch:
Currently, I am a Professor in Wildlife Biology and Director of the Avian Science Center in the Franke College of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana.
I completed my Ph.D. in Biology at the University Miami – Florida in 2000 with an emphasis on developing a monitoring program to understand population dynamics of Snail Kites, an endangered species. This monitoring program is still be using today to monitoring Snail Kites. I then worked as an applied Avian Ecologist for Colorado Parks and Wildlife focusing on working with private landowners in eastern Colorado to gathering information about a species petitioned for listing during that time, Mountain Plovers. I joined the academic faculty at the University of Montana in 2011.
Dr. Dreitz directs the Avian Science Center, a university based-research center that focuses on advancing the conservation and management of bird populations and their habitats. Through rigorous research, the center addresses pressing ecological questions, emphasizing the role of birds as indicators of environmental health. ASC integrates long-term monitoring, innovative technologies, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders to develop science-based solutions for wildlife conservation challenges. Additionally, the center is committed to education and outreach, fostering the next generation of scientists and engaging the public in the importance of avian and ecosystem health.
